The Gambia is small, English-speaking and runs on Greenwich Mean Time all year, which makes it one of West Africa's easier first trips from Europe. Most visitors spend the bulk of their time on the Atlantic coast and add a few day trips inland.
Where to base yourself
For a first visit, the Kololi and Senegambia area puts restaurants, beaches and tour pickups within walking distance. Kotu is quieter, and Bakau feels more local. See where to stay.
A simple way to split a week
Take a slow first day on the beach. Then alternate: a day out (a river trip, a nature reserve, Banjul's market and museum) followed by a day near your hotel. Longer upriver trips work better as an overnight than a rushed day.
Getting around
Tourist taxis serve the hotels. Agree the fare before you set off. For day trips, many visitors hire a driver-guide rather than drive themselves.
Things first-timers are glad they knew
- Carry some cash in dalasi. Markets and taxis run on cash.
- People are friendly and conversations start easily. A polite "no, thank you" is fine if you don't want a guide.
- Pack a hat and high-factor sun cream. The sun is strong even when there's a breeze.
- Download offline maps and set up mobile data before you fly.
