Check before buying
Data-only: no local phone number. Confirm your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
Check your phone. It must support eSIM and be unlocked by your home network.
Buy and install at home on Wi-Fi, usually by scanning a QR code or through the provider's app.
Keep your home SIM active for texts such as bank codes, but turn off its data roaming.
On landing, switch the eSIM line on for data and follow the provider's activation steps.
eSIM or local SIM?
Local SIM cards from Gambian networks such as Africell, QCell, Gamcel and Comium are sold in the country and usually need ID to register. A local SIM gives you a Gambian number; a travel eSIM saves the errand and works as soon as you land.
