Renting a car in The Gambia
A car gives you freedom for day trips, but read the terms closely and be realistic about the roads.
What to check before you hire
- Licence
- Confirm with the rental company, and with official sources, which licence you need and whether an International Driving Permit is required for your nationality. We don't state this for you because it depends on your licence.
- Insurance
- Find out the excess (the amount you'd pay after damage) and what cover reduces it. Check exclusions for tyres, windscreen and underbody.
- Deposit
- Many companies hold a deposit on a credit card in the main driver's name. Debit cards may not be accepted.
- Fuel policy
- "Full to full" is usually the simplest. Photograph the fuel gauge and mileage at pickup and return.
- Condition
- Walk round the car with the agent and photograph existing damage before driving away.
Road conditions
Main roads near the coast are the easiest driving. Side roads can be sandy or unpaved, and conditions change in the rainy season. Driving after dark is harder on unlit roads with pedestrians and livestock.
