Makasutu Culture Forest

What it is

Makasutu is a privately run ecotourism forest reserve in Kombo Central, near Brikama, on the Mandina Bolong, a tributary of the Gambia River. Palm and gallery forest, savanna and mangrove creek meet here. Visitors usually come on a guided day that combines a pirogue trip through the mangroves, forest walks and cultural activities.

It's a popular way to see inland Gambian landscapes and mangroves in a single day from the coast.

Natural significance

In Mandinka the name means "holy forest". The reserve combines conservation with local culture, and baboons, monkeys and many bird species live here.
